ReplyDeleteThis is a status report, from 2008, on projects that are supposed to be in development for downtown. It's based on a Sector Plan, created by the Montgomery County Planning Board, that sets out goals and visions for different areas of the county.
ReplyDeleteThe Sector Plan, created in 2000, calls for replacing the old East of Maui skatepark that was built in the late 1990s, and that used to be where the fountain and some restaurants are now (that's the reference to replacing the interim skateboard facility.) When East of Maui was built, it was intended to only be there temporarily.
But it was really, really popular. And the Sector Plan acknowledges that, and it also points out the need for a downtown skatepark as a way to keep property from being destroyed by skaters.
Long story short -- we're supposed to have a skatepark downtown. The county has known about this need for a very long time. Skaters have pushed for it, fought for it, for a very long time. But here we are, almost 10 years later, and as you can see in the status report, there's "no progress to date."
